What is an ATOL license?
By law, every UK travel company which sells air holidays and flights is required to hold an ATOL, which stands for Air Travel Organiser’s Licence. If a travel company with an ATOL ceases trading, the ATOL scheme protects customers who had booked holidays with them. It ensures the consumer does not get stranded abroad or lose money. The scheme is designed to reassure consumers that their money is safe and provide assistance in the event of a travel company failure.
What is the history of ATOL?
ATOL was introduced in 1973, as the popularity of overseas holidays grew. After several travel company failures left people stranded, the UK Government realized consumers required protection should companies in the unregulated travel sector fall into difficulties. The scheme was designed to cover charter flights and package holidays and functioned well for years. However, the holiday market has changed considerably and a rise in online booking means many people now book the components of their holidays separately. As a result, changes were made to the ATOL scheme in April 2012. It now covers all overseas air holidays where a flight and accommodation have been booked together. It also covers some flights booked separately and applies in some other circumstances too.
How is ATOL funded?
ATOL is run by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). It is funded by contributions from the travel companies, who must pay into the scheme for each person they book on a holiday. This money creates a fund that is used by the CAA to ensure consumers either complete their holiday or if they cannot travel, receive a full refund.
Who is the Travel Trust Association?
The Travel Trust Association (TTA) is a travel trade association. Their membership base consists of travel agents, tour operators, and travel organizers. The TTA exists to provide you, the consumer, with 100% financial protection and has been doing so for over 20 years. This means that every penny that you pay to Hispania Limited is protected by the TTA. It means that you can book your holiday securely in the knowledge that the TTA will protect you in the unlikely event of Hispania Limited becoming insolvent. Hispania Limited, for any reason financially fail or cease trading, the TTA will liaise with the suppliers and tour operators to ensure that your holiday goes ahead unaffected. All members of the TTA have to abide by the members’ Code of Conduct. This is to ensure that the customers receive the best possible service.
How does the TTA provide 100% financial protection?
Every Travel Trust Association (TTA) member deposits your money into a Trust Account. A Trust Account is a bank account designated to hold the customer’s money. The money remains in the Trust Account and is supervised by an appointed Trustee who is either a banker, chartered or certified accountant, or a solicitor. Trustees are required to authorize payments from the Trust Account. In addition to being held in trust, your money is also guaranteed. A Stand-Alone Safe Seat Plan policy is a guarantee which is issued on your behalf. If your money is not in the Trust Account, the Stand Alone Safe Seat Plan policy will reimburse the loss of any amount paid up to the value of £11,000 per passenger. It is the combination of the Trust Account and the Stand Alone Safe Seat Plan that ensures all of the money which you have paid is safely protected and available to pay for those services which you have booked with us. Please be aware that this is not a travel insurance policy. The Stand-Alone Safe Seat Plan will only protect the money that you have paid to us.
What happens if a TTA member enters into an Event of Default?
A travel company enters into an Event of Default once they have ceased to be a member of the Travel Trust Association (TTA). It is a standard term used by the TTA when a company is no longer a member for any reason. If you, the consumer, have booked with a TTA member who has entered into an Event of Default, do not worry. The TTA provides total financial protection for any monies you have paid members for travel. We expect consumers to travel as planned. The TTA will liaise with suppliers and tour operators to ensure that your holiday goes ahead unaffected. If for any reason this is not possible, they will administer a claim for a refund of money that you had paid to the TTA member for your holiday. Consumers must contact the TTA before booking a replacement holiday as it is likely that you will continue with your booking as intended. If you wish to cancel your booking please note that you will be subject to the usual cancellation charges applied by the tour operators. The TTA requires all consumers to provide the following information: copies of correspondence with the TTA member, including booking confirmation, invoices, proof of payment. And, if you paid by:

What is the difference between the TTA and ABTA?
ABTA ended its consumer promise in 2006. This means that not all of the travel arrangements that you book through an ABTA member are necessarily protected in case of the financial failure of the travel company. You will need to ask the ABTA member how financially secure their travel arrangements are. If the arrangements are not protected, the ABTA member may be able to offer suitable insurance to cover you. If you book with a Travel Trust Association (TTA) member your money is 100% financially protected.
